Answers

  1. What are the computer classrooms?
The computer classrooms are instructional spaces owned and operated by the Rutgers Writing Program. As instructional spaces, they are dedicated to classroom usage. Please do not send students to the computer classroom to print papaers.

There are three computer classrooms, located on the College Avenue, Douglass, and Livingston campuses. Each is equipped with 25 computers as well as a printer. Teachers wishing to use one of the computer classrooms for their classes may reserve sessions online.

  2. Where are they located?
The College Avenue lab is located in Murray Hall, room 038. The Douglass Lab is located on the first floor of 135 George Street, in room 105. The Livingston Lab is located in Lucy Stone Hall, B Wing, room 103A (behind the Writing Center).

  3. What are the door codes?
Because of the need for security, the door codes are not publicly published. If you need access to one of the computer classrooms, check with the Writing Program support staff or Directors on your campus. If you are making a reservation in the computer classroom, you will find the door codes in the computer classroom online scheduling system. Once you are logged into to the classpage system, click on the link to edit your section, click on the link to add a computer classroom meeting time, and then click on the link for policies and information.

  4. How do I schedule time in one of the computer classrooms?
Because of the high demand for access to technology across all Writing Program courses, instructors are asked to limit themselves to five scheduled sessions at any one time (so, once you have one session in the lab, you can add another at the end). In order to make a reservation, you will first need a classpage. If you did not make a classpage during orientation, contact Russell Clarke. He can email to you full directions on the classpage system and the online scheduling system.

  5. Can I use the computers in the labs to do some work?
Instructors on CAC and Douglass should have access to computers in their offices; instructors on Livingston are invited to use the computer classroom there since there are no accessible computers in the instructor office area. In general, teachers are invited to use our labs to do work as long as no class is scheduled at the time. Because the computer classrooms are, in the end, classrooms, instructional use must take priority. However, most often instructors who are holding class in the computer classroom will have no issue with you coming in to use one of the extra computers. Simply ask the instructor if it's OK for you to use the lab during their class time.

  6. What software is installed in the labs?
The computers in the computers classrooms run Windows XP operating system and have installed:
    • Microsoft Office XP, including Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint
    • WordPerfect Office 2000
    • Internet Explorer 6
    • Netscape Navigator 7
    • Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004
    • NetOp School screen sharing software
    • Webdrive
    • Acrobat Reader 6.0

As well as some other programs. In addition, at least two computers in each lab are equipped with Adobe PhotoShop 7.0 and Adobe Acrobat 6.0. If you would like to know if the labs have a particular program that you don't see on this list, contact Russell Clarke.

  8. Are there printers in the computer classrooms?

  9. What are the computer classroom policies?
Detailed information on the computer classroom policies are available from within the computer classroom online scheduling system. To review these policies, log in to the classpage system, click on one of your sections to get to its edit page, click on the link to add a computer classroom meeting time, and then click on the link for policies and information. If you have questions about these policies, or any difficulty locating them, please contact Russell Clarke. Note: All teachers are expected to read these policies before booking time in the computer classroom.

  10. I thought we were only supposed to reserve 5 sessions. How come some teachers seem to have more?
Exceptions are made for those classes which rely on Writing Program software. For example, 425 (Web Authoring) needs the web creation software located in the labs. If you have any questions about this policy, or would like to be consider for an exemption to the 5 session rule, please contact Russell Clarke.

  11. Can students save work to the computers in the labs?
You should encourage students to bring in a floppy or Zip disk to save their work. All students may also use the Webdrive system. This system assigns a drive letter to a student's Eden "ftp" space. They can save data to this space as though saving to any file, and then they can access it from any computer with a web connection. Information on the Webdrive software is available in the tutorials.
