Answers

General:
- What are the forums?
The Writing Program forums provide an electronic space for discussion
and conversation. The forums are a kind of "electronic bulletin
board" which allow visitors to post questions or observations
and allow other visitors to reply to those posts to form a "thread" of conversation.

- Where are they located/how do I get to them?
The forums are located at: http://www.classguide.net/rutgers/forums.
You can also reach the forums from the Writing Program's main
page, http://wp.rutgers.edu,
by following the Writing Program Forums link in the Student "bun."

Getting a Forum:
- Do I need to register? How do I do that?
While you are welcome to read the forums as an unregistered guest,
in order to post messages to the forums, you will need to register.
You can do this by visiting
the forums and clicking "Register." For detailed
information on the registration process, please visit the "Forums" tutorial.

- How do I get a forum for my own class?
If you would like a forum created for your class, first register
for the forum system and then email Russell Clarke with your user name and the name you would like for
your forum.

Using the Forums:
- What are the cross-section forums and how
do I participate in those?
Cross-section forums are a unique opportunity to extend discussion
and enrich student learning. Cross-section forums are open to
all students within a course, rather than students only
in one particular section. This confluence of students from many
different sections, some of whom may have completed different
readings or may have different takes on the readings completed,
creates an interchange of ideas and information that is impossible
to create within a single classroom. If you would like to participate
on a cross-section forum with your class, please contact your
course coordinator. If there is no cross-section forum
for your course, contact your coordinator about the possibility
of starting one. Contact information for course coordinators can
be located on the Directors
and Staff page of the Writing Program website.

to a post?

- How do I upload a file to the forum?
To attach a file to a new post, simply click the [Browse] button
at the bottom of the post composition page, and locate the file
that you want to attach from your local hard drive. Only certain
types of files may be attached. After posting, the attachment
will show up in the body of your message. To view the contents
of the attachment (if it is not already displayed) simply click
the filename link that appears next to the attachment icon. For
more detailed information on attachments, view our "Forums"
tutorial.

Problems/Troubleshooting:
- I'm a registered user but it won't let me
post. What's wrong?
The most common cause for this problem is that you did not log
in. Return to the main page and make sure you're logged in. The
log in box in located at the bottom of the screen; please be sure
to scroll down to locate it. Also, be sure you're entering in
your user name and password correctly. Check to see if your caps
lock is on; you may be typing in all caps and not realize it.
If you've forgotten your password, you can request an e-mail containing
your password at: http://www.classguide.net/rutgers/forums/member.php?action=lostpw

- I went to the forum and it thinks I am someone
else. What do I do?
The last user may accidentally have not logged out of the forums
on the computer you are using. At the bottom of the page, click
the "Log Out" button. You can then enter in your own
user name and password to post with. Be sure to log out, yourself,
when you're done. If this does not solve the problem, try hitting
Reload/Refresh on your browser (this button is usually located
between "the stop sign" and "the house" at
the top of the browser). This should cause the browser to get
a fresh copy of the page, which may resolve the problem. You can
also try logging into the forums with a different browser (Netscape
instead of Explorer, Explorer instead of Netscape). If none of
these solutions resolve the problem, please notify Russell Clarke. In your email, try to be as descriptive as possible,
including information on which lab your were in (or TA office),
which browser you were using, and which steps you tried to correct
the problem.

- What are cookies and should I be using them
in the forums?
The use of cookies on the forum is optional, but may enhance your
experience of the site. Cookies are used to enable functions such
as showing whether or not a thread or forum you are viewing has
new posts since your last visit, or to automatically log you back
in when you return to the site after being away for a while.
When you register, you will be given the option to 'Automatically
login when you return to the site'. This will store your user
name and password in a cookie, stored on your computer. If
you are using a shared computer, such as in one of the computer
classrooms, a library, school or internet cafe, or if you have
reason to not trust any other users that might use this computer,
we do not recommend that you enable this.
The forums also give you the option to use a cookie to track
your current session, ensuring that you remain logged-on while
browsing the site. If you choose not to store this information
in a cookie, the session data will be sent through each link
you click. Choosing not to use a cookie may cause problems if
your computer's connection to the internet uses a proxy-server
and you share links with other users behind the same proxy.

- The forum is acting very strange. What should
I do?

the forums in a hour or so. If you continue to experience problems,
