Answers

General:

  1. What is a mailing list?
A mailing list is a way of distributing a single email to a large group of people, as well as a way of creating an electronic conversation within a group through email. When an email is sent to the mailing list, a copy of it is sent out to all people who have signed up for the list.

  2. Can you give me a sense of common mailing list etiquette?
    Sure!
—Be sure you're sending the right kind of reply to the right place; that is, don't send personal replies out to the whole list and don't send replies meant for the whole list to only one person.
—If you're posting to the whole list, quote from the original posting judiciously and extend discussion. If you just want to agree with someone's posting, for example, there's no need to quote the entire original message.
—Stay on topic. Avoid making postings to the list that don't concern the subject matter of the list.

Posting:

  1. Can I post to the mailing list?
Generally speaking, yes. The way in which a mailing list is used is determined by each individual course coordinator. Some lists have been configured as memo-distribution lists only. In these cases, only the coordinator can send mail to the list. Other lists have a larger focus on discussing the course and classroom issues, strategies, or problems. These lists welcome postings. You should check with your course coordinator about the list for the course you're teaching. For a list of course coordinators and their contact information, see the Directors and Staff on the Writing Program homepage.

  2. How do I reply to a posting from a mailing list?
Replying to a posting is like answering any email. However, you will want to be aware of where your reply will be going. Some lists are set up so that your reply goes only to the person who made the original posting. Other lists are set up so that your reply goes out to the entire list. If you are sending a personal email of reply, you want to make sure the "To" field of your email lists only the email address of the sender, not the email address of the list. Similarly, if you want to continue the discussion by having your email sent out to everyone, be sure that the "To" field has the list address, and not the address of the poster. List addresses are easy to identify: they all end in email.rutgers.edu

Joining/Leaving Writing Program Mailing Lists:

  1. Do I need to sign up for a mailing list?
No. Course coordinators administrate the mailing list(s) for their course(s). Therefore, the coordinator for your course will make sure you're registered for the appropriate mailing list. However, if you have not provided the Writing Program with an email address, please be sure to contact your course's coordinator with that information since the mailing lists are used to send out important announcements and memos.

  2. I'm overwhelmed with mail. Could you please remove me from the mailing lists?
Unfortunately, no. The mailing lists are the primary means of distribution for memos, news, and announcements, so it's vital that you remain on the mailing list. However, you may wish to contact the coordinator for the course(s) you're teaching (see the Directors and Staff page of the Writing Program website). Some coordinators make it clear in the subject line if the email is a topic for discussion or an important memo. That would allow you to read only those emails with important information.

  3. I'm no longer teaching at Rutgers/teaching this course. Can you remove me from the mailing lists?
Of course. Contact the course coordinator of the list . For a list of course coordinators and their contact information, see the Directors and Staff on the Writing Program homepage.

Other:

  1. Can I get a mailing list for my class?
Yes. For information, see this page. However, you may want to consider if you really want a mailing list for your class. You will need to handle the configuration and maintenance of the list yourself. You may wish, instead, to use the classpage mailing list (see the classpage answers page) as well as the forums. These combined can do everything a mailing list can do, with less work for you.
