Introduction:
In order to use e-mail, you must have some form of e-mail program,
called a "client." Most computers on campus use Outlook
Express, which is the scaled down version of the Microsoft Outlook
E-mail Program. Outlook Express comes with Internet Explorer so
it is probably already installed on your machine. While other clients
are available (for example, Netscape Messenger) this tutorial will
focus on Outlook Express.
Opening Outlook Express:
To start working with Outlook Express, you will need to open the
program. While Outlook Express is loaded on most computers, it may
not appear on your desktop, taskbar, or Start Menu.
Launch the application in any one of the three ways:
From the Desktop
Locate the Outlook Express icon on your desktop. The icon will
look like a small envelope with a blue arrow wrapped around it.
Once you've located the icon on your desktop, double click it to
launch Outlook Express.
From the Taskbar
This method is similar to launching it from the desktop, but instead,
you will be using the icon in the taskbar. The icon in the taskbar
will look like the one on the desktop, but a bit smaller. Once you've
located the icon on your taskbar (located next to the "Start"
button), click it to launch Outlook Express.
From the Start Menu
To launch the Outlook Express application from the Start Menu,
click the Start Button, then select Programs, and then click on
Outlook Express.
Upon opening the application, you will see an opening screen for
Outlook Express, followed by the application itself, and (if you're
using the program for the first time) a prompt asking if you would
like to use it as the default e-mail client. Depending on your situation,
you may want to select yes, but for our purposes, click No.
