Introduction & Opening | ICW and Outlook Interface | Configuring, Creating Folders & Receiving

The Internet Connection Wizard:
The first time you use Outlook Express, it will bring up the Internet Connection Wizard, which is a series of screens where Outlook Express asks how you want your e-mail setup configured.

This wizard is a quick way of having your e-mail setup without having to go through the cumbersome details of learning how to do so manually. Each screen will consist of a dialog box of some form with four buttons: Back, Next, Cancel, and Finish.

These screens will ask the following in order:

1.) What name will you be using to identify yourself when you are sending a message? Here you would type in your name, as you would like it to appear in the "From" field of emails you send.

2.) What e-mail address will you be using for people can reply to? Here you would type in your e-mail address; for example, you@rci.rutgers.edu.

3.) What incoming and outgoing mail servers will you be using? Here you will type in the e-mail servers that have been assigned to you for incoming and outgoing e-mail. See http://www.rci.rutgers.edu to search for this information for RCI. If you have a different ISP, contact them for the information.

4.) What account username and password will you are using to access your e-mail? Here you would enter the username and password you use to access your mail.

Following each of the questions, you will click the Next button. If you need to go back to a particular portion of the wizard, click the Back button. When you are finished answering the above questions, click the Finish button. If you would like to exit before finishing, click Cancel.

The Outlook Express Interface:
Outlook Express has a screen that is divided into two parts. One the left side, there is a directory structure, which has different directories to store your emails in. Outlook Express has two categories of folders: Outlook Express, which is the central location for your e-mail, newsgroups, and contacts, and Local Folders, which consist of the Inbox, Outbox, Sent Items, Deleted Items, and Drafts.

On the right side of the screen are the particular folder's contents. For instance, if you click on the Inbox folder on the left, you will see all the emails that are currently in your Inbox.

On the top there are two things: 1.) A menu bar, which consists of: File, Edit, View, Tools, Message, and Help, 2.) A toolbar that consists of buttons for basic tasks such as creating an e-mail, replying to an e-mail, forwarding an e-mail, printing an e-mail, deleting an e-mail, and sending and receiving incoming and outgoing e-mail.
