Introduction & Opening | ICW and Outlook Interface | Configuring, Creating Folders & Receiving

Automating Tasks | Outside Resources

Configuring E-mail In Outlook Express Manually:
If you exited the Internet Connection Wizard, and you need to set up your e-mail configuration, you can still do it manually. Just follow these steps:

1.) Click on the Tools Menu.
2.) Click Accounts.
3.) Look for the account name that has your e-mail configuration settings, and select it (or click New >> Mail).
4.) Click Properties.

At this point, you will have a window appear with the properties of your e-mail settings. The first screen, which is under the General tab, contains user information such as your Name and Reply to address, which you provided in your Internet Connection Wizard setup. Fill in the fields on this screen, and then click the Servers tab.

Under the Servers tab, you will see the Incoming and Outgoing server information as well as the Account information that you were asked to fill in during your Internet Connection Wizard setup. If this information is blank, fill it in with the server and account information that has been provided to you. Then click the OK button.

There are three other tabs in your e-mail settings window: Connection, Security, and Advanced. The Connection tab is for setting up a connection to your e-mail via a LAN, or dial-up. Security is for Encryption purposes, and Advanced is for such things as how you want to have your e-mail delivered. If you're using more than one computer to check e-mail, you may want to check "leave a coy of message on server." This will tell Outlook Express to get a copy of your mail. The actual messages can be downloaded on your other computer. For example, you may want to get a copy of emails at work and then download the actual e-mail at home.

Creating Folders in Outlook Express:
You can create a folder in Outlook Express in one of the following two ways:

1.) Click on the File Menu in the menu bar, Select Folder, and then click New, or
2.) Right-click on a folder on the left side of the screen in Outlook Express, and Select New Folder.

At this point, you will see a Create Folder Dialog Box. It will have a field for entering the name of your folder. Type in a name for your new folder, and be sure to enter a name that will be appropriate for the e-mail you will have in it.

Now, you have a new folder to go along with the other local folders in your Outlook Express directory structure. At this point, you may want to alter the structure of your folders so that your new directory is a subdirectory of your Inbox. This will make organizing your incoming mail easier.

Folders help you organize mail. You can create a folder called "Answered Mail" and move messages there after you've replied to them. You could also have folders called "Personal," "Work," "Priority," or however you want to organize your mail.

Receiving E-mail in Outlook Express:
Upon opening Outlook Express, there will probably be e-mail already waiting for you in your Inbox. Outlook Express adds this to welcome you to the program.

However, if you are away from the office, or at home, and need to dial in, you do not necessarily have e-mail waiting for you. So, you will need to tell Outlook Express to deliver any incoming mail that hasn't arrived yet. To do this, you can do either one of two things:

1.) Click on the Send and Receive All Button on the toolbar, or
2.) Click on the Tools Menu on the menu bar, Select Send and Receive, and Select Send and Receive All.

At this point, there will be a pop-up window with an e-mail going back and forth. Once the window disappears, your new e-mail will be in your Inbox. Of course, you will need an internet connection first.
