Introduction to Acrobat | Making a PDF from Word | Making a PDF from the Web | Opening, Viewing, Saving

Methods of Transforming a Document into a PDF File:
There are several ways you can turn a document into the PDF format. If you have a saved Microsoft Word document on your computer, you can easily turn your Word file into a PDF file. Additionally, you can save web pages as PDF files.

Making a PDF File from Microsoft Word:
The most common (and probably easiest) way to make a PDF file is to open a Word document in Microsoft Word and convert that Word file into a PDF file from there.

First, you'll need to open up the document that you want to save into a PDF file in Microsoft Word. To open the Word program, you can either double click on the Word icon found on the desktop,

open Word from the Quick Start menu,

or use the Start menu and select Programs >> Microsoft Word.

In Word, go to the menu bar and select File >> Open. Navigate to the desired Word file on your computer that you wish to save as a PDF file.

Once the file is opened in Word, you can now save it as a PDF file.

There are two ways that you can save your document as a PDF file in Word. The first method can be used using the most recent versions of Microsoft Word. Underneath the Standard Toolbar, locate the two Adobe Acrobat icons.

Click on the first icon called "Convert to Adobe PDF." A "Save PDF file As" window will then appear, asking you to type in a name for your PDF file, and find a location on your computer to save the file. Be sure to give your file a .pdf extension. Click on the "Save" button to begin converting your Word file to PDF.

After you click the "Save" button, Adobe Acrobat will work with Word to "print" your PDF file. Don't worry; when the window says "printing," it's not printing to an actual printer. It's "printing," creating, the PDF file to be viewed by Adobe Acrobat.

When the printing process is complete, your PDF document will be ready to view.

Another way you can create PDF files in Word is by going to the menu bar in Word, and selecting File >> Print. The "Print" window will then appear. In order to "print to PDF" rather than actually printing your document to a printer (you don't want to do that!), you must change options within this window.

In the upper "Printer" section of the window, go to the "Name" drop down menu and from there select "Acrobat Distiller." Then press the "OK" button. After that, a window will pop up asking you to name the PDF file and find a location on your computer to save the file. Click on the "Save" button. After this, Word will "print to PDF" your document, and it will be ready for opening and viewing.
